Captain Alex Koutsakis

Captain Alex Koutsakis has over forty years of maritime experience, working ashore and at sea on oil tankers,
dry cargo vessels, OBO’s, gas carriers and naval vessels. He has held the position of President of PetroMed Corporation
and PetroMar International Inc. since he formed the companies over eleven years ago.
Born on the island of Crete, Greece, Alex is a graduate of the Hellenic Merchant Marine Academy. Following his
graduation he sailed aboard a number of deep sea commercial vessels trading world wide. While serving his national
service in the Greek Navy as an Ensign Alex also attended Athens Maritime College and upon graduation at the age of
twenty-five he took command of his first vessel, a Greek Navy ocean going tug. On completion of his national service
Alex commenced sailing as Chief Mate aboard tankers. After obtaining his unlimited masters license in 1978, Captain
Alex moved to the United States, where he continued his maritime career, sailing on U.S. owned, foreign flagged tankers.
In 1981 Captain Alex joined Admanthos Shipping Agency in New York as Port Captain. At Admanthos he was
responsible for all vessel inspections and acquisitions. Alex also oversaw all crew training and operational issues and
planning, attending and managing expenses for all dry dockings. Responsible for overall safety and operation of the
company’s fleet, Captain Alex controlled the daily operation and commercial management of a fleet of six handy-size
clean product carriers.
In 1987 Captain Alex obtained his Master of Science degree in Marine Transportation Management from SUNY
Maritime College at Fort Schuyler. The same year he moved his young family to St. Croix in the U.S Virgin Islands,
where he took the position of Manager of LVA (Liquid Volumetric Audit) for the Amerada Hess Corporation. While at
Hess Alex was responsible for all incoming crude receipts, which averaged approximately one million barrels per day, as
well as overseeing all outgoing product cargoes from the refinery. He was also responsible for the Hess controlled St.
Lucia storage facility, ensuring the correct measurements of all inbound crude cargoes and outbound transfers to the
St.Croix refinery. During his tenure at Amerada Hess Captain Alex facilitated and single-handedly brought the
percentage of annual cargo losses to their lowest level in the refinery’s history.
In 1993 Captain Alex moved his family back to the United States and took a job as Operations Manager for
General Maritime Corp. where he was responsible for ensuring the successful loading and discharge of purchased dry,
crude and products cargoes for major oil companies and traders.
In June 1995 Captain Alex founded PetroMar International Inc, and subsequently PetroMed Corporation.
Located in Stamford, Connecticut, presently the company operates offices in Bayonne, New Jersey, Houston, Texas,
Port Everglades Florida, Freeport, Bahamas, Athens, Greece and Port Gentil, Gabon. The company also maintains a
strong presence in Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Egypt. The company operates for most of the major international
oil companies and traders, including but not limited to: Statoil, ChevronTexaco, Morgan Stanley, Westport Petroleum,
Ferrell International, Tauber Oil, Repsol YPF, Sunoco and KOCH Industries.
Petromar International Inc. has handled vessel inspections, attended dry docks, vessel and heavy plant
purchase evaluations, vetting solutions, terminal consultancy, product distribution and storage projects and loss control
for international oil companies, traders, ship owners and operators. In addition PetroMar inspected over 200 Million
barrels of crude oil and 100 Million barrels of refined product, saving their clients millions of dollars through their
dedicated, professional and consistent approach to managing marine operations.
